The line forms before seven. Not a long one — this is Alliance, not a metro — but a steady one, the same dozen faces in roughly the same order, the staff already pulling the regular before it's asked for. The Press Room opened in 2021 into a storefront that had been dark for years, and it has spent every morning since making the case that downtown still has a center.

What sets the Press Room apart isn't the coffee, though the house roast has its devotees. It's the back room — a dozen mismatched tables the owners deliberately never filled with merchandise. People work there, meet there, argue there. It has become, without anyone planning it, one of the few places downtown where you can simply be without buying your way in for the hour.

Running a café on Main Street is not a path to wealth, and the owners will tell you so plainly. They stayed because the alternative — one more dark window — was a cost they weren't willing to add to the block. Three years in, the bet looks less like sentiment and more like foresight: the corner is busier than it's been in a decade, and the Press Room is the reason.
